'Twere the night before solstice, and all through the house,
every creature was peaceful from the cat to the mouse,
herb bundles were hung from the rafters with care,
in hopes that Cemunnos or Pan would be there.
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
while visions of faerie folk danced in their heads,
Candles were lit at the circle's four points,
Earth, Air, Fire, Water each one does anoint.
We called on the powers of Goddess and God,
we called to the Ocean, the Wind, Flame and Sod,
When from inside the circle there arose such a clatter...
but all was quite well, nothing was the matter.
'twas only a cat, a spirit old as time,
pausing to sniff at the chalice of wine...
so we grounded ourselves and went back to our task,
we poured some rainwater from a small silver flask.
We gathered our power, we centered ourselves
for we knew Santa and his pals were all elves,
we raised up our voices and started to sing,
songs that were older than this whole "Christmas" thing.
We thought of the Oak King, the Holly King too,
remembered the old year, looked well to the new.
Before circle was over, we had cakes, we had ale,
our hearts they were joyous, our spirits were hale.
The sunrise was coming with dawn's golden light,
"Happy Solstice," we cried out, "say goodbye to the night!"
